Crops Research Directorate comprises of three programs (Cereals, Grain Legumes and Oil seeds and Horticulture):
Cereals
- Responsible for crop improvement research on rice, millet, maize, sorghum and findo
- Screens and identifies high yield potential and pest resistant crop varieties for diffusion to farmers
- Crop varieties are screened for adaptation to different agro ecologies of The Gambia
Grain Legumes and Oil seeds
Conducts crop improvement research through evaluation and maintenance of high yielding, pest and disease tolerant genotypes suitable for Gambian conditions. Grain legumes and oil seeds focus include;
- Groundnuts
- Cowpea
- Sesame
- Cotton
Horticulture
Conducts research on vegetables, fruit and root tuber crops by focusing on;
- Crop improvement
- Agronomic practices
- Crop protection
- Post-harvest management
